Happy Wednesday! Former President Donald Trump was found liable for sexual abuse and defamation in a civil case brought by writer and columnist E. Jean Carroll. A jury has ordered Trump to pay Carroll $5 million, but the former president faces no prison sentence as the case is civil, not criminal.
Here are some of the other stories you may want to take a look at today:
- Justice and the GOP: “West Virginia has always been more complex than the occasional national attention gives it credit for,” writer Andrew Donaldson notes in a cover story for the Washington Examiner. “The Mountain State’s traditionalism is often mistaken for by-the-book conservatism when there is far more nuance at play.” One case in point: current West Virginia Governor, and now U.S. Senate hopeful, Jim Justice. Donaldson provides great background and analysis in this article published just in time for what’s sure to be a long election road ahead. (Andrew Donaldson for The Washington Examiner)
- Journalist Layoffs: With more and more newspaper executives slashing costs amid a decline in traditional print readership and advertising numbers, a rising swath of journalists are finding themselves on the unemployment rolls. NPR’s Jason Fuller reports that newspaper conglomerate Gannett went from 21,000 journalists to just over 11,000 journalists within four years. This decline in reporters has major implications for democracy, as Fuller expertly explains in a reel on NPR’s Instagram. (Jason Fuller, NPR)
- FestivALL Schedule Announced: In lighter local news, officials with Charleston’s annual FestivALL event announced this year’s schedule on Tuesday. The nine-day celebration of art and music will feature street fairs, parades and more. Festivities begin on Friday, June 9 and coincide with Live on The Levee. A full schedule can be found on local broadcast station WOWK TV’s website. (Isaac Taylor, WOWK)
- Home Opener: The Charleston Dirty Birds baseball team took on the Lancaster Barnstormers last evening at the opening home game of the season at GoMart Ballpark on the city's East End. The Gazette-Mail's Carli Berkhouse was there to capture opening night on video. The Dirty Birds play today at 10:35 a.m. and then again on Thursday at 6:35 p.m. (Carli Berkhouse, The Charleston Gazette-Mail)
