Hello reader. It’s Monday, the beginning of a new work week. It’s also the beginning of Look@This, a new feature here on The Lede blog.
Each weekday morning I’ll share some of the best visual, audio, written and online journalism I come across here. And you can offer some of your favorite pieces too. Send links to the best local, statewide, national or international reportage to michael@ramsburgreports.com. I may use them in this space in the future.
Without further ado, here are a few stories that captured my attention today. Take a look at this:
- 4-H Adventure Club: Students in Fayette County can participate in positive outdoor fun as part of the 4-H Adventure Club, profiled in a recent video by the Charleston Gazette-Mail’s Carli Berkhouse. The club is open to the county’s high school-aged students (grades 9th-12th). As part of the program, participants engage in outdoor recreation opportunities after school in the New River Gorge area. (Carli Berkhouse, The Charleston Gazette-Mail)
- Facing Hunger Foodbank: Huntington’s Facing Hunger Foodbank is expanding. The nonprofit is opening an on-site food pantry and a teaching kitchen, HD Media’s Jesten Richardson reports. Construction is set to begin later this summer. (Jesten Richardson via the Charleston Gazette-Mail)
- Bourbon Expansion: West Virginia’s Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) Commissioner Fred Wooten is working on expanding bourbon offerings in the Mountain State. “I assume spiritual responsibility here,” Wooten told WV Public Radio’s Randy Yohe. ABC employees have begun bringing more high-end bourbon from Kentucky and are even offering a contest to win used bourbon barrels. (Randy Yohe, West Virginia Public Broadcasting)
- Coronation: The coronation of Britain's King Charles III was broadcast worldwide on Saturday. Many watched as the royals bore their respective crowns for the first time. But one thing missing from the newly-appointed Queen Consort Camilla’s crown was the Koh-i-Noor, a much disputed (and very large!) diamond. The Washington Post featured a news comic about the jewel on their Instagram. It’s worth a look. (Paul Schemm & Satwick Gade, The Washington Post)
